Zen
Simplicity, presence, awareness: the art of being
What is Zen?
Zen is a branch of Mahayana Buddhism that emphasizes direct experience rather than abstract teachings. Zen comes from Sanskrit dhyana and Chinese chan, meaning meditation.
Zazen - seated Zen
Sit with your back upright and hands on your knees or folded together. Keep your eyes half open, looking toward the floor. Breathe naturally. Just sit, without a goal or an outcome. This is Zen itself.
Kinhin - Zen walking
Walk slowly, aware of every step. Hold your hands at your chest or behind you. Focus fully on your feet and the ground. Walking itself is meditation.
Koan - an unanswerable question
«What is the sound of one hand clapping? Koans interrupt analytical thinking. The answer is found through presence rather than ordinary reasoning.
Wabi-sabi
Beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and incompleteness: a cracked cup or a dry branch. Nothing is perfect, nothing is permanent, and nothing is finished.
Ichigo ichie
«One time, one encounter. Every moment is unique and will never recur. Live with this awareness.
